Cheryl Cole caused an almighty stir when she stepped out in a daring backless dress at the National TV Awards on Wednesday. But it wasn’t the figure-hugging black Versace number that got people talking – it was the huge new tattoo on her back.

Now it’s been revealed the new inking took a whopping 11 hours to perfect, at a studio in LA.

We first caught sight of Cheryl’s sprawling design during X Factor rehearsals late last year, with sources claiming the inking could have been added to the butterfly tattoo she already had on her back – the second part of a pattern on her thigh.

Now it’s thought the huge new tattoo – spread across her lower back – took a whole day to create, at famous Los Angeles parlour, Shamrock Social Club.

And according to insiders, Mrs C created the new design to signify a new start in her life, following her traumatic split from cheating hubby Ashley.

Seriously, don’t mess with Cheryl Cole.

After the year she’s had, you can’t blame the singer for feeling a bit hard done by.

And the feisty star has been letting off some steam.

In this month’s issue of Elle magazine, she said: “I am not taking this s*** any more. I’ve been through too much.”

After suffering a bout of malaria, going through a very public divorce and being criticised on everything from her style choices to her singing ability, Cheryl admits that she’s had to resist the urge to “stay at home and cry for a year.”

She said: “I have had enough. There’s only so much you can cope with and then you either allow it to swallow you up or you say, ‘Sod this. I have had it with negativity and bitchiness.’”

“I want people to like my music but I couldn’t give a s*** about what they think of me. Take it or leave it. I do not care.”

Despite being one of the most beautiful women in the world, the events of the last year have taken their toll on the star.

She said: “My confidence has never hit such an all-time low as it has this last year. It feels really bad. I don’t look at pictures of myself. I can’t.

“I want to feel nice as a woman – and for women to think I look nice too. Fashion is armour, isn’t it? And I need that armour.”

Things can only get better, Chezza.

Take a look back at the crazy year she’s had…

Cheryl Cole would love to take six months out to meditate on a mountain.

The ‘Promise This’ singer – who, last year, divorced soccer player husband Ashley Cole and battled potentially-fatal malaria, which she contracted during a trip to Africa with rumoured boyfriend Derek Hough – often dreams of taking some time out from her hectic career.

She said: “It would be nice to take six months out and got to a mountain top and just meditate, let myself go.”

Cheryl also revealed she was tempted to have therapy after her marriage split, but her public profile means she doesn’t trust anyone other than friends and family.

She explained to the February edition of Elle magazine: “It crossed my mind but I’m not trusting enough to bare my soul to a stranger. I’m lucky that I’ve got friends and family to turn to.”

Despite refusing therapy, Cheryl admitted she didn’t cope as well as some people thought with all her problems last year but was determined to put on a brave face in public.

She said: “It’s very much a perception. Nobody knows what I went through behind closed doors.

“Nobody knows what it was like when I was on my own. Of course I held it together in public. Who wouldn’t?”

Cheryl, 27, is set to put her difficult year behind her with a planned move to Los Angeles after reportedly signing a deal to become a judge on the US version of ‘The X Factor‘.

Love her or hate her, 27 year old singer/songwriter, X-Factor judge and rumored US X-Factor judge, Cheryl Cole is the next cover girl for the February 2011 issue of ELLE Magazine for the UK. The two versions of the cover are featured below and both beautifully showcase Cole in a very simple, almost regal and elegant light. Take a look.

Simon Cowell has reportedly threatened to pull the plug on an American version of The X Factor, if bosses don’t agree to have Cheryl Cole on the judging panel.

US TV executives are said to be concerned that the public won’t understand or warm to the Girls Aloud star and would much rather Simon chose a home-grown star than another Brit.

An X Factor insider told The Daily Star: “Simon is clashing heads with US producers who don’t want Cheryl on board.

“Bosses are convinced the show needs big US stars to compete with the star-studded line-up of American Idol.

“The American public don’t know who Cheryl is and just ‘being a good friend of Simon’s from some unknown girlband’ isn’t cutting it.” However Simon is refusing to back down on the issue and is insisting that the public will love her in the States, just as the did in the UK.

The source added: “Simon’s had some heated phone calls with the producers. He thinks Cheryl is perfect for the role.”
